The origin of the name Ray Gao is still shrouded in mystery. No evidence has been found about this yet. Local folklore is the only historical one and even that is disputed in some cases. According to many, the name of a special person, especially a king, king, local ruler or conqueror is associated with the name of Golapganj. It is mentioned in the book 'Sri Gauranga's Pubanchal Paribhraman and Assam and Dhaka South Leela Prasang' that a local revenue officer with the rank of Dewan used to reside in Sylhet district since the Pathan period. He was the representative of the Delhi Emperor. After the predecessors of King Girish Chandra had held this position for many years, during the reign of Islam Shah Shur, the son of Pathan Emperor Sher Shah, a new Dewan named Golab Roy was appointed to this position in 1540. He was a very religious person, the name "Golabganj" was created after him. Later it became known as "Golapganj" from "Golabganj". Pube thana administration was Hetimganj. In 1906, the then British government moved the police station office near Golapganj Bazar, a beautiful place surrounded by the natural environment of the Surma Bidhaut sub-district.
The book 'History and Tradition of Golapganj' written by Anwar Shahjahan was published in 1996 and it was the first history book about Gaon Haor in Roy.
